About the White Horse of Hanover
The White Horse of Hanover, also known as the Saxon Steed, entered the Royal Arms in 1714 when George I ascended to the British throne from the House of Hanover. It represents the Hanoverian ancestry of Queen Elizabeth II and is one of the heraldic beasts that stood at her coronation in 1953.
Designed by Jody Clark, the reverse depicts the White Horse holding a shield displaying the Royal Arms of George I, including the arms of England, Scotland, Ireland and Hanover. The design also features The Royal Mint’s advanced chainmail security background, while the obverse bears the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, also designed by Jody Clark.
