The 2026 Great Britain £25 The Angel 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin is a modern reinterpretation of one of the most historically significant gold coins in British numismatics.

The Story of The Angel
The history behind this modern issue stretches back more than five centuries.
The original English Angel was introduced during the reign of Edward IV, replacing the Noble and having a value of one-third of a pound in 1465.
Its name came from its depiction of the Archangel Michael defeating the dragon, an image representing the triumph of good over evil.
The historic Angel subsequently acquired an unusual role beyond everyday coinage.
English monarchs were once believed to possess a divine ability to heal scrofula, historically known as “the king’s evil”. During ceremonies associated with the “royal touch”, sufferers were eventually presented with Angel coins that had been handled by the monarch.
The coins could be pierced and worn around the neck, helping the Angel develop an association with protection and religious symbolism.
The Royal Mint’s 2026 interpretation draws directly upon this extraordinary numismatic heritage while presenting the Angel through contemporary British coin design.
The Design
Obverse
The obverse carries the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings.
