2025 Royal Arms Quarter Sovereign Gold Proof NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo First Releases
The 2025 Royal Arms Quarter Sovereign Gold Proof celebrates the 200th anniversary of Jean Baptiste Merlen’s historic Royal Arms design, first used on The Sovereign in 1825.
For the 2025 collection, The Royal Mint faithfully remastered Merlen’s Royal Arms design and paired it with the official coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
With a Maximum Coin Mintage of just 1,535, the Quarter Sovereign was issued within The Royal Mint’s multi-coin Proof sets. The 2025 collection is also historically significant as the final Sovereign collection struck in rose gold before The Royal Mint returned to yellow gold from 2026.
This example is certified NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo First Releases. At the time of checking on 8 October 2026, NGC records 101 First Releases examples in PF70 Ultra Cameo with none graded higher, making PF70 Ultra Cameo the NGC Top Pop grade for this First Releases category.

200 Years of the Royal Arms Sovereign
Jean Baptiste Merlen’s Royal Arms design first appeared on The Sovereign in 1825 during the reign of King George IV.
To commemorate its 200th anniversary, The Royal Mint revived, restored and remastered Merlen’s historic design using modern minting technology for the 2025 Sovereign collection.
The reverse features the distinctive crowned Royal Arms associated with the historic shield-back Sovereigns, providing a clear departure from Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon design more commonly associated with the modern Sovereign.
The obverse carries the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings, bringing together a nineteenth-century Royal Arms design and the definitive portrait of the current monarch.
Maximum Coin Mintage of Just 1,535
The 2025 Royal Arms Quarter Sovereign has a Maximum Coin Mintage of just 1,535.
The Quarter Sovereign was included within The Royal Mint’s multi-coin Sovereign Proof sets rather than being offered as a standard individually presented coin.
The Maximum Coin Mintage represents the maximum authorised number of 2025 Royal Arms Quarter Sovereigns across the relevant presentations. It should not be confused with the number subsequently submitted to NGC or the number achieving a particular grade.
For more information about the distinction between original issue figures and certified populations, see our Coin Population vs Mintage guide.
The Final Rose-Gold Sovereign Collection
The 2025 Royal Arms issue also marks an important transition in the modern history of The Sovereign.
The 2025 Sovereign collection represents the final Sovereign collection struck in rose gold, bringing an end to the modern use of the copper-rich alloy responsible for the distinctive warmer colour of these Sovereigns.
From 2026, The Royal Mint returned the Sovereign range to yellow gold.
The 2025 Quarter Sovereign therefore combines two separate historical characteristics: the 200th anniversary of Merlen’s Royal Arms design and its place within the final rose-gold Sovereign collection.
