200 Years of the Royal Arms Sovereign
Jean Baptiste Merlen’s Royal Arms design first appeared on The Sovereign in 1825 during the reign of King George IV.
To commemorate its 200th anniversary, The Royal Mint revived and remastered Merlen’s historic design for the 2025 Sovereign collection.
The reverse features the crowned Royal Arms associated with the historic shield-back Sovereigns, providing a distinctive alternative to Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon design more commonly associated with the modern Sovereign.
The obverse carries the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
Maximum Coin Mintage of Just 1,260
The 2025 Royal Arms Double Sovereign Gold Proof has a Maximum Coin Mintage of just 1,260.
The Double Sovereign was issued across The Royal Mint’s 2025 Royal Arms Sovereign Proof presentations, including multi-coin sets.
The Maximum Coin Mintage represents the maximum authorised number across all relevant presentations and should not be confused with the number subsequently submitted to NGC or certified at a particular grade.
For more information about this distinction, see our Coin Population vs Mintage guide.
The Final Rose-Gold Sovereign Collection
The 2025 Royal Arms issue also marks the end of an era for The Sovereign.
The 2025 Sovereign collection represents the final Sovereign collection struck in rose gold. From 2026, The Royal Mint returned the Sovereign range to yellow gold.
The 2025 Double Sovereign therefore combines the Royal Arms bicentenary, a Maximum Coin Mintage of 1,260 and its place within the final rose-gold Sovereign collection.
