What Are Certified Gold Coins?
Certified gold coins are coins that have been independently authenticated, assessed and graded by a professional third-party grading service. Once graded, the coin is encapsulated within a protective holder, commonly known as a slab, which displays information including the coin's identity, grade and certification details.
Two of the best-known international coin grading services are NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service). Both provide independent authentication and grading, helping collectors assess the condition of certified coins on a recognised numerical scale.
Understanding NGC and PCGS Coin Grades
Certified coins are graded according to their condition and method of manufacture. Mint State coins typically use the MS designation, while Proof coins are commonly designated PF by NGC or PR by PCGS.
Grades run on a numerical scale up to 70. An MS70, PF70 or PR70 coin represents the highest numerical grade available within the respective grading system, while grades such as MS69 and PF69 represent exceptionally high-grade examples.

Why Collect Certified Gold Coins?
Professional certification provides an independent assessment of a coin's authenticity and condition. The encapsulated holder also protects the coin from direct handling and provides a permanent reference to its assigned grade.
Certification can be particularly relevant to modern Proof coins, high-grade bullion issues and scarce British gold coins where condition forms an important part of the coin's collectability. Some collectors specifically seek top-grade examples such as NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo, NGC MS70 and PCGS PR70.
Mintage vs Certified Population
A coin's mintage and its certified population measure two different things. Mintage relates to how many examples of a coin were produced, while a grading population records how many examples have been certified by a particular grading service at a particular grade.
Population figures can change as additional coins are submitted for grading, so they should be treated as dynamic rather than fixed figures. Learn more in our guides to coin population reports and coin population vs mintage.
