Description

2026 Great Britain £25 The Angel 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo

The 2026 Great Britain £25 The Angel 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin is a modern reinterpretation of one of the most historically significant gold coins in British numismatics.

Produced by The Royal Mint and struck in ¼ troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold to Proof standard, the coin reimagines the historic Angel for the modern era through an intricate new design by sculptor Sandra Deiana.

The Royal Mint has restricted the issue to a Limited Edition Presentation of 750 coins, with a Maximum Coin Mintage of just 760 worldwide.

This example has been independently authenticated and certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as PF70 Ultra Cameo, the highest numerical grade awarded by NGC.

At the time of writing, NGC has certified just 22 examples in PF70 Ultra Cameo.

The combination of a low maximum mintage, ¼oz of fine gold, Royal Mint Proof craftsmanship and perfect NGC certification makes this an exceptional example of the 2026 Angel.

Why This Coin Stands Out

The 2026 Angel brings one of Britain’s historic gold coin designs into the twenty-first century.

The original Angel was introduced during the reign of Edward IV in the fifteenth century and became one of the principal gold coins of medieval and early-modern England.

For the 2026 issue, The Royal Mint commissioned sculptor Sandra Deiana to create a modern interpretation of the historic subject.

The reverse depicts the Archangel Michael slaying Satan, represented as a dragon, incorporating areas of higher relief to create a more pronounced three-dimensional appearance.

Its limited production provides another important element of collectability.

Why NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo Matters

Independent certification provides collectors with assurance regarding a coin’s authenticity and condition.

This example has been professionally authenticated and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as:

PF70 Ultra Cameo

NGC grades coins using the internationally recognised 1–70 Sheldon grading scale, with 70 representing the highest numerical grade.

NGC defines a PF70 coin as having no post-production imperfections visible at 5× magnification.

The Ultra Cameo designation is awarded to qualifying Proof coins displaying bold contrast between deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices.

NGC Population

(at the time of writing)

NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo: 22

This coin therefore combines the highest numerical NGC grade with the Ultra Cameo designation and a current PF70 Ultra Cameo population of only 22 examples.

The Story of The Angel

The history behind this modern issue stretches back more than five centuries.

The original English Angel was introduced during the reign of Edward IV, replacing the Noble and having a value of one-third of a pound in 1465.

Its name came from its depiction of the Archangel Michael defeating the dragon, an image representing the triumph of good over evil.

The historic Angel subsequently acquired an unusual role beyond everyday coinage.

English monarchs were once believed to possess a divine ability to heal scrofula, historically known as “the king’s evil”. During ceremonies associated with the “royal touch”, sufferers were eventually presented with Angel coins that had been handled by the monarch.

The coins could be pierced and worn around the neck, helping the Angel develop an association with protection and religious symbolism.

The Royal Mint’s 2026 interpretation draws directly upon this extraordinary numismatic heritage while presenting the Angel through contemporary British coin design.

The Design

Obverse

The obverse carries the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings.

The portrait faces left and is accompanied by the monarch’s titles and the coin’s £25 denomination.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by sculptor Sandra Deiana and provides a contemporary interpretation of the imagery that gave the historic Angel its name.

At its centre is the Archangel Michael slaying Satan, represented as a dragon.

Selected elements of the design have been executed in higher relief, creating additional depth and giving the composition a pronounced three-dimensional appearance.

Surrounding the design is the Latin inscription:

PER CRUCEM TUAM + SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR

The Royal Mint translates this as:

“By thy Cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer.”

The religious imagery and Latin inscription deliberately connect the modern coin with the iconography of the historic English Angel.

Image Information

The slab images shown are digitally produced representations for presentation purposes. The close-up coin photographs show the actual coin offered for sale.

A Maximum Mintage of Only 760

One of the defining characteristics of this issue is its restricted production.

The Royal Mint specifies:

Maximum Coin Mintage: 760

with:

Limited Edition Presentation: 750

The distinction is important.

The Limited Edition Presentation represents the number made available in the specific Royal Mint presentation format, while the Maximum Coin Mintage represents the maximum number of coins that may exist across all presentations.

For collectors assessing the overall scarcity of the coin itself, 760 is therefore the relevant maximum mintage figure.

Combined with an NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo population of 22 at the time of writing, this provides collectors with both an official Royal Mint production figure and a current measure of certified population.
