Pistrucci’s Historic 1817 Design Returns
The modern Sovereign was introduced in 1817, with Italian-born engraver Benedetto Pistrucci creating the celebrated image of St George and the Dragon that would become one of the defining designs of British coinage.
For the 2017 bicentenary, The Royal Mint returned to Pistrucci’s historic interpretation.
Unlike the familiar later Sovereign reverse, the scene is surrounded by the Order of the Garter bearing the inscription:
HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE
The design also depicts St George carrying the broken lance associated with Pistrucci’s early composition.
The Garter design had last appeared on the Sovereign family in 1820, making its return for the 2017 bicentenary a distinctive feature of the anniversary Proof range.
The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s fifth definitive portrait by Jody Clark. The 2017 date was placed on the obverse, marking the first time since 1887 that the date had appeared on the obverse of a Sovereign.
Issue Limit & NGC Population
The individually presented 2017 Gold Proof Quarter Sovereign had an issue limit of 2,500 coins.
The Royal Mint’s published 2017 coin-sales figures record:
2,495 individual Quarter Sovereign sales
Additional Quarter Sovereigns were also included within Royal Mint multi-coin Proof sets, so the individual issue limit and individual sales figure should not be interpreted as the total number produced across all presentations.

- PF70 Ultra Cameo Population: 363

The Royal Mint issue figures and NGC population measure different things. The Royal Mint figures relate to the original release, while the NGC Census records coins subsequently submitted to and certified by NGC at a particular grade.
NGC population figures can change as further coins are submitted for certification.

NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo
PF70 is the highest numerical Proof grade awarded by NGC. A coin graded 70 has no post-production imperfections visible at 5× magnification.
The Ultra Cameo designation identifies qualifying Proof coins displaying strong contrast between frosted design elements and deeply mirrored fields on both sides.
This example therefore combines NGC’s highest numerical Proof grade with its Ultra Cameo designation.
